General Pairing Discussion Thread

Post by Silverzephyr on Fri Jul 16, 2010 9:45 pm

So I thought that it would be good to have a general pairing discussion thread. Obviously it doesn't exclude the creation of more specific threads about pairings, but this is just a place to state pairing preferences, talk about why you like/dislike them, and if you wish talk in more detail about various aspects of the romantic couples in the series. Pairing debates are fine but no flame-wars, please (not that I really have to say that I'm sure, since the fandom seems respectful anyway). I also thought about including platonic and other kinds of relationships, but, well, this thread is general enough as it is so that can be a different thread if need be. : P

I don't have any specific discussions to start at the moment, but I'll at least start the thread off by posting my own preferences. My avatar/sig combo should make it clear that my OTP is AnubitufxGuragief, but I'm also a big fan of MamiinaxRodoreamon, WapourifxMorinas, and AaeruxNeviril. I'll probably post reasons and such later.

I like all of the canonical/semicanonical, functional pairings, really: Mamiina/Rodoreamon, Aaeru/Neviril, Dominura/Limone, Anubituf/Guragief, Morinas/Wapourif. I also admit a tragedy-loving soft spot for Yun/Onashia and what I would term in polite company an 'effed-up-ness-loving' soft spot for Alti/Kaimu. My favourite is probably Mamiina/Rodoreamon, mainly because of the lovely class/position/dominant-servant-submissive-master dynamics and because it hits my desire for tragic happiness/happy tragedy HARD. I kind of love it. A lot.

Like LonelyDelight, I don't mind the canon pairings we get from the show that much, though I'm less fond of some than others. Dominura/Limone still seems strange to me, but it's not something I hate.

Everyone knows my favorite as being Aaeru/Neviril. They were the pairing I fell in love with by the end of the first time I watched, and they were the first pairing I wrote about. That particular story still gets a good many hits. My second favorite is Rodoreamon/Mamiina, which I only began liking after I wrote about them together. And now that someone continues to fuel it, I find myself rather fond of capturing them.

With good reason! Your love for and understanding of the characters and the pairing really shines through.

I like all the canon/semicanon pairings (Neviril/Aaeru, Rodo/Mamiina, Morinas/Wapourif, and the boys). Dominura/Limone made me a bit uneasy at the beginning because of the agegap, but their story turned out so epic and touching that I didn't care about such details anymore.

Yun/Onashia was equally, if not even more, epic. Their last embrace is one of the most memorable visual images of the series for me.

I like well made stories about twisted relationships, so I like Alti/Kaimu, not because I'd think they make a good couple but because I enjoy watching them angst and then struggle to build their relationship again from scraps and ashes.

Kaimu/Paraietta is another I like, even though it's onesided. I can't really see these two together, but they form a nice "chain of obsession" as Alti -> Kaimu -> Paraietta -> Neviril. Everyone who has had a onesided crush can relate to the frustration of these characters.

Floe and Vyura need some love too, though I have no personal favorite pairings for either character.

I still don't really ship Dominura/Limone due to the age gap, but I do really like their relationship, whatever it is interpreted as (and they are interesting since they can probably be interpreted as many types of relationships at once). The development of their relationship and its dynamic was unique and enjoyable to watch, and I found it believable despite how unusual it might be considered. Like I said though, not necessarily something I ship, but I could maybe see something post-series.

Alti/Kaimu...also not something I ship since I tend to interpret them along the lines of a sibling relationship that grew dysfunctional and then, once it was rebuilt, returned to a more healthy sibling relationship. Alti may have had a crush on Kaimu but I think over time any romantic feelings that were there went away. As individual characters I don't find them very interesting but their relationship was a bit more interesting and I'm happy to see that after the series they seem to have overcome their past and returned to a happy pair of siblings.

The Yun/Onashia storyline, regardless of whether or not it's as a ship, is absolutely beautiful and the final scene of them is one of my favorites in the series. I don't know if I'd necessarily say I /ship/ it but I tend to use the word 'ship' as a pretty...specific term when it comes to my preferences?...and I'm not sure Yun/Onashia fits into that box. I don't think I explained that well but basically I wouldn't put it on my list of pairings I like but their relationship in the few interactions they got to have with each other is breathtaking.

Now that I've explained my thoughts on everything I DIDN'T list in the first post as something I ship, I'll come back later when I have time and talk about the pairings I DID list. I'm not too confident in my ability to talk about the ones I ship though so rather than talking about my take on their relationship I may just list my favorite scenes with them or...something. I'll figure that out later.

Well, what is it that you like so much about Anubituf and Guragief? We can start with that.

Re: General Pairing Discussion Thread

Post by Silverzephyr on Fri Jul 23, 2010 9:51 am

Oh dear. What is it I DON'T like about Anubituf and Guragief? XD Like I said I'm not too confident about my ability to explain my favorite ships but I shall try.

I started shipping these two early on in the series, but since they were nowhere near being my primary focus the first time I watched the show I don't really remember /how/ early. Perhaps I was in the mindset that I was watching a yuri anime or perhaps I was just giving more attention to the characters that had more screentime, but either way for the majority of the series my first time through I spent most of their scenes keeping up a mantra of "IshipitIshipitIshipit" but once they went off screen I would promptly forget about them until the next time they reappeared.

And then I started watching episode 22 and they were arguing and somehow these characters who I hadn't been focusing on so much were suddenly breaking my heart a little bit. And then it was mended when Anubituf showed up in a pilot outfit, hopped into a simile, lead the sibyllae into battle, miraculously /won/ that battle by using the only real display of battle tactics thus far, and made up with Guragief by /making eye contact/. Needless to say, after that, episode 25 made me an extremely happy shipper. The first time I finished this show I actually considered WapourifxMorinas to be my favorite pairing. About a day after I finished watching, when I'd absorbed everything, that shifted and my OTP's been the same ever since (this was over a year and a half ago).

My love for them really solidified though as I rewatched the series and saw all of the little scenes that I hadn't remembered because I hadn't been focusing on them. Episode 6 my second time around set me into a fit of squeals once I came across the balcony scene, which is still one of the sweetest things I've seen (and quoted in my signature). Once I rewatched episode 22 I was really quite surprised with how few scenes there were of the argument--I had been so emotionally involved in it that I guess I must have thought it was focused on in the entire episode, but Anubituf and Guragief have a way of making great use of limited screentime.

Speaking of which, I want to mention the specific way that most of the screentime is used--the majority of their time on screen they are together, usually interacting with each other, and like I said it was early on in the series that I began shipping them (regardless of the fact that I wouldn't have called them my /favorite/ ship until much later) and yet most of their interactions are not really explicitly ABOUT their relationship. We see them working together more than anything else, but through seeing those interactions I saw a really strong and close relationship between them. Seeing a solid, believable relationship between men through scenes of the men working together was actually quite different from anything I'd really seen before and I liked it. Of course, one can only imagine the non-work-or-war-related personal discussions they have in the privacy of their quarters at night, but anyway. Wink

I also really just love them as characters. They're both pretty much made of win in their own ways. Anubituf's always calm, composed, and commanding presence and Guragief's compassion for and constant worrying about the sibyllae.

I adore pretty much every time they're on screen, but a few highlights off the top of my head:
- The previously mentioned balcony scene in episode 6, everything in episode 22, and everything in episode 25 (which I should talk about more and may later but this post is already going to be pretty long).
- In episode 10, Anubituf observing that Guragief is lonely, Guragief admitting that he is and that he thought Anubituf would be, too, Anubituf confirming that, and them promising to try to help the Sibyllae as much as possible.
- In episode 17, them talking about the grim situation with the war, Guragief saying they would have to make a difficult request of the sibyllae, Anubituf correcting him that it would be an order, and the focus on their faces afterwards (Guragief's eyes narrowing, Anubituf looking sad). Later in the episode in a meeting, where Anubituf tells the sibyllae that the mission they are about to go on is mandatory, without showing any of the sadness he had earlier. And once the sibyllae have taken off for the ruins, Anubituf saying (quote from the DVD subs) "I know this is hardest on you," and Guragief replying that others were suffering more.
- In episode 21, when they had a discussion about a meeting that ended in Anubituf beginning to say something and cutting himself off, which left Guragief with a concerned expression(that scene, for whatever reason, had such /ambience/ which was probably helped by the nighttime setting).
- Every other scene of theirs ever.

And I have to at least somehow talk about episode 25 because I love them in it.
- Guragief beginning to say that the sibyllae of Chor Tempest would be returning soon, but stopping himself when he realizes he can't call them that anymore, and Anubituf smiling and responding that he is looking forward to finding out what Chor Tempest's sibyllae have chosen.
- Guragief saying that arranging with the Plumbish priestesses to help Aaeru and Neviril escape may be the last thing he can do for Chor Tempest and then reminiscing about Neviril during the hearing asking if, despite her misgivings, she is still a Simoun sibyllae, and Anubituf saying Guragief's name and kissing him when he turns around before reassuring him that he is still a sibyllae (and, less explicitly, that they are still a pair, which I think is my favorite sentiment ever expressed in this series).
- Guragief getting angry at the Plumbish official who is going to force Aaeru and Neviril to go to the spring at gun point, and Anubituf grabbing his hand and effectively calming him instantly.
- Guragief's anger at everyone who had been mistreating the sibyllae throughout the series manifesting in him karate chopping an argentum soldier and Anubituf observing that it is an "unusually barbaric act" for him (that is still the most amusing scene in the series to me).
- Their final happy goodbyes to Aaeru and Neviril as they fly off.

So this is a ridiculously long post that I hope did my favorite pairing some sort of justice. I'm going to end it with a few miscellaneous things I love about them that didn't fit anywhere else:
- The performance of their voice actors.
- The eyecatch of the two of them as sibyllae.
- The fact that they are not shown completely facing each other for even a single moment until the kiss. I still have no idea what this means, if it means anything at all (it is very possible that, artistically, it's more interesting to animate people talking if they are positioned not completely facing each other) but I'm sure many possible meanings could be derived.

I loved that scene so, so much. If only he had done that to that disgusting Defence Minister as well...

HOUKO KUWASHIMA YESSSSSS. Oh, and Reiko Kiuchi, too.

- The eyecatch of the two of them as sibyllae.

Ah, yes. I loved this so, so much.

Say, should I talk about why I love Rodore/Mamiina, or is it kind of obvious?

Something funny I noticed while looking through that one site that says who voice acts the bit characters: The Defense Minister's voice actor did one of the Argentum soldiers in the battle scene in episode 22. ANUBITUF BLEW UP THE DEFENSE MINISTER.

HOUKO KUWASHIMA YESSSSSS. Oh, and Reiko Kiuchi, too.

Houko Kuwashima as Guragief is my favorite performance in this show, and Simoun's voice actors all pretty much sound amazing as their roles to me. And yes, Reiko Kiuchi's voice worked great as Anubituf too.

Ah, yes. I loved this so, so much.

I still maintain that Anubituf and Guragief were the cutest girls in the series. And squeee Guragie blushing. Speaking of them as sibyllae, according to the japanese wikipedia page for Simoun Anubituf was the auriga and Guragief was the sagitta. I had thought as much but never seen it confirmed.

Also you should totally talk about MamiinaxRodoreamon and Rachel should talk about AaeruxNeviril and other people should talk about WapourifxMorinas and whatever else they ship. On a side note, I often see fans of WapourifxMorinas but not much fandom for them in the way of art/fics etc.

I generally like most of the cannon pairings but my top three pairings cannon or otherwise...

1.Mamiina/Rodoreamon
2.Floe/Alti
3. Limone/Yun

I'll eventually elaborate, just wanted to have these done for later.

First of all, welcome to the board. It's wonderful to have a number member.

Secondly, you have some interesting pairings here. I can't wait to see what your explanations are, especially for the second two. Quite the matchups there!

Welcome to the Simoun forums, Juke!

I see you picked quite the heartbreaking pair as your #1. She wasn't my favorite, but I had a lot of emotional investment in Mamiina. Try Rachy's fanfic Grieving for an Angel sometime, it's a very powerful read.

XD I've done a few with those two, pairing-wise. They're the only pairing I've written besides my favorite. My secret project sorta hints at a Paraietta/Rodoreamon pairing, which I've hinted at in other future fics with them without really knowing it.

Re: General Pairing Discussion Thread

I love how this series explores forbidden relationships. You have all sorts of examples of "taboo" relationships, yuri and yaoi aside. MorinasxWaporif is pretty much the only straight pairing in the show. Razz I do think they make a good couple, though.

I liked Kaim's relationships a lot, both for her love for Para-sama, and for the complications with Alti. I... really loved the scene with Kaim and Parietta in the hanger, where they get close, but Parietta's fascination with Neviril stops it from developing, and Kaim's memories of the night with Alti bring up some painful emotions for her too. And Alti is watching it all...

Even from a non-sibling standpoint, I empathize with the sisters. There's this certain lingering dark feeling when things have gone too far with someone that you're not comfortable with that I can really identify with, especially the awkwardness and the wanting to avoid the other person, and even the little snipes Kaim gets in at Alti in the earlier episodes. But I can also feel Alti's pain of being rejected on any and all fronts, from even having a normal relationship, after the fact. She just wanted to be there for her big sister... but... instead, she caused her a lot of pain. It's so hard to deal with hurting someone you love by accident.
